Supported Children’s Programs
Jewish Council for Youth Services

At Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS) Jon Vegosen Champ Camp (JV Champ Camp), low-income Hispanic children from the Highwood community in Illinois enjoy a traditional summer sports camp experience that introduces them to healthy lifestyle habits. Through a wide variety of activities, campers learn not only the fundamentals of tennis and swimming, but also learn about nutrition and healthy food while building confidence, self-esteem, and life skills. The camp reaches children at risk of obesity, aiming to reverse the trend towards summer weight gain among vulnerable children and instead instill enjoyment of physical activity and fresh, nutritious food.

In April 2019, the JCYS Board of Directors expects to finalize the sale of one of the agency’s properties, Camp Henry Horner. This will allow the agency to allocate increased organizational resources to other programs, including JV Champ Camp. This year, JCYS has hired a new director of the Lillian L. Lutz Recreation Center (“The Lil’”), Jordyn Cohen, who will work in conjunction with Micky Baer, the Director of North Shore Operations, and our returning Tennis Specialist, Coach Kim Kehl.
